  • Snoring is caused by a narrowing of the airways to the lungs, which means that less oxygen enters and something known as hypoxia will then be produced. Because there is not enough air, there will be a vibration that produces the annoying sound. If at some point there is not enough air into the lungs, which is what happens when we stop breathing for only a fraction of the time, it leads to what is called “sleep apnea.”
  • Usually the reason we snore is due to the disorder sleep apnea. But it can also be due to the presence of polyps, anatomy of the nasal septum or palate, or even allergies. If there is something that is constant, it is necessary to consult a doctor to get the correct diagnosis.
  • Sleep apnea is not just something we do not have to worry about. We must remember that the lungs will not receive oxygen and that the brain must make the respiratory muscles make an extra effort to get air, and this is where the loud and sudden sounds come from. In the long run, sleep apnea can become chronic and end up making us suffer from hypertension, heart failure, type 2 diabetes, and it can also be the cause of many strokes. First, there is something you need to keep in mind: Snoring is a symptom that something is not right. Snoring every night when you go to bed is not the same as snoring for a week because you have a cold or an allergy, or snoring while taking a nap in the middle of the day.

If your snoring is light and sporadic, you just need to put the following basic tips into practice. Remember them:

  • Always pay attention to your weight, especially since obesity always leads to snoring at night.
  • If you smoke, quit immediately. Obstruction of the respiratory tract can be a consequence of tobacco and therefore snoring, coughing and poor health.
  • Always sleep on your side. A very simple technique to make sure you do just that is to put a tennis ball  in the back of your nightwear. This way you will feel the annoying bump when you turn your back, which will make you want to turn to the side again.
  • Set fixed times for eating and for going to bed; routine is good for our body.
