How do you know if your eggs have gone bad? As the temperature rises, the food tends to get bad faster. If you want to know if the eggs you’ve had in the fridge for a while now are still okay to eat, take a look at these tips to determine if they’s still edible.

Eggs deserve special attention because if you eat them when they have become bad, you can actually make yourself sick. So it is important to make sure that they are in the best possible condition before eating them.

How can you tell if your eggs have gone bad?

There are some ways to tell if an egg is still good or if it is best to throw it away. For example, if you shake it and hear the egg yolk pounding against the inside of the shell, it’s still good.

Here are some other tests.

Drop the egg into water

Eggs in water

The first thing you do is put the egg in a container filled with water. Ideally, it should be transparent so that you can see the result more easily.

Pay attention to these points:

  • If the egg sinks rapidly and remains at the bottom in a horizontal position, the egg is still fresh.
  • If you see it sink slowly and stay on the bottom in a diagonal or upright position, then the egg is not fresh.

You can think of it this way: the larger the angle, the older the egg. However, the egg is still fine to eat.

  • If the egg does not sink to the bottom and instead floats in the middle, then it is a sign that it has become bad and should not be eaten.
  • If you see the egg floating on the surface of the water, it means that it has become completely bad.

The liquefaction is caused by gases that the organic material produces when it decomposes. And as we have said, the egg has crossed the line where it is now not to be eaten.

Boil the egg

  • If you boil the egg, divide it in half, and see that the egg yolk is in the middle and there is a small pocket filled with air, the egg is still good to eat.
  • But if the egg yolk is closer to the shell and there is more air in it, the egg has become bad.

Crack the egg

Another easy way to tell if the egg is still good or not is by cracking it raw on a plate.

  • If you see that the egg does not spread too much outwards and the egg yolk remains intact, then the egg is fresh.
  • On the other hand, if you see the white and the egg yolk spread all over the plate, and the egg yolk is completely diffuse, you should consider that the egg has become bad.

Look for an expiration date to determine if your eggs have become bad

Egg

Something to keep in mind is the time the hen laid the eggs. This is known as “week 0.” From week 4, the eggs are not normally sold.

The reason is that eggs expire in week 4, according to the date on the label. However, Norwegian eggs last much longer, and before 2000 the date marking was set at 45 days. This was changed to comply with the EEA directives.

From then on, they begin to lose their organoleptic properties and after 45 days and beyond, they should be eaten with caution.

Some recommendations for keeping the eggs good are to store them in their original box and always in a cool, dry place.

If you boil your eggs, store any leftovers in the refrigerator, stored in an airtight container. They can be eaten for up to 3 or 4 days if stored this way. However, it is always a good idea to check things like smells etc.

Remember that the food stays good for a shorter time when it is hot outside. In that case , it may be best to keep them for only 2 days.
