Nomophobia: When you are completely dependent on your cell phone

Are you addicted to your cell phone?  Do you feel anxious when it is empty of battery? Do you always have a charger near you if it dies? If you answered yes to these questions, you may suffer from Nomophobia .

It is undeniable that the latest technology has made life easier. But using it incorrectly can turn something that was once a positive thing into a problem.

Although not many people are really addicted to cell phones, it is true that we have certain unhealthy habits that can lead to nomophobia in the future.

How do I know if I’m suffering from nomophobia, if I’m addicted to my cell phone?

Nomophobia does not just appear overnight.

Rather, it is a consequence of certain unhealthy habits such as looking at the cell phone every time we are in an uncomfortable situation.

In some cases , the phone becomes a companion that helps us feel less lonely in situations when we are alone. This can be when we are on the bus or when we have to wait for someone at a restaurant.

However, this can aggravate and make us dependent on our cell phone to relieve emotional stress. This can cause us to check messages and emails when we have not received anything, and make it impossible for us not to respond to messages we receive.

With this we can establish some parameters that will help you realize if you suffer from what is called nomophobia:

  • You check continuously and impulsively to see if anyone has written to you or sent you an email.
  • If your phone shuts down because it is out of battery or you do not have an internet connection, it is very dramatic for you because you automatically feel isolated.
  • You are the first person to write  about what you think, what you do, and what you have been doing.
  • You are also aware of the number of likes-clicks your publications receive. This increases your need to post more about your experiences.
  • Sometimes you think you heard the phone make a sound saying you have a message,  when in reality you have not received anything.
  • When you are with your friends, you always have the phone in your hand. Sometimes you cannot follow the call because you are already talking to someone on your phone.

The reason you suffer from nomophobia is because you feel the need to participate in the connection that technology has given you.

Now it does not matter if family and friends are on the other side of the world. With a simple message, conversation or video chat, you can communicate with them without any problems because there are no barriers!

But whether it is true that we are more connected than ever, we also feel more alone.

Nowadays, it is not necessary to leave home to find a partner or even to shop. More so if you work from homeā€¦ then you do not even have to worry about leaving the house to go to work.

But is life really real if you only live it through technology?  Has the phone really replaced face-to-face conversation?

We live a life that is not very real

People with Nomophobia  always publish  things about their lives on social media and are very dependent on those around them.

But what you see is not always real.

  • Many couples who post pictures filled with happiness are actually going through a difficult time in their relationship.
  • The friend who never does anything but post positive quotes can actually suffer from severe depression.

All we see on social media is what other people want us to see. But what is really behind their posts?

When a person suffers from nomophobia, they will always compare their life with that of others. They will feel bad because – while others are out on weekend trips or visiting New York – they are at home on the couch watching the phone.

Although what they are looking at can definitely be real, the pictures can also be edited, taken from the internet, or from many years ago.

Some people with nomophobia suffer a lot, and if they do not sort out their cell phone addiction, they may end up suffering from episodes of severe anxiety and stress that can lead to depression.
